On Saturday afternoon, Lena booked us a tour at Pewabic Pottery Do I have to say that one more time, I learned something I had no idea about before?
Mary Stratton, the founder of Pewabic Pottery, was an extraordinary woman. She was an outstanding artist and ran her pottery business, which survived the Great Depression (though she had to switch to producing smaller items). She passed away at 94, and until her last day, she was very active. It’s remarkable that hse lived such a long life, because not only she was working in a rather dangerous conditions, but also she used uranium for her signature orange color! Right now, all her radioactve pottery is displayed behind the glass, but back then, nobody knew!
Our enthusiastic tour guide told us, that they recently discovered mary Stratton’s “recipe book” with instruction on how to create different colors. Unfortunately, these recipies have only a historic value, because most of them, even if they don’t contain uranium, are bad for humans. Once again, you just kee wondering how she lived to be 94!
After this amazing tour, we drove to Belle Isle and ate lunch, which Lena packed for us (remembering how last time we couldn’t find any place to eat 😂)
