Pullman Railroad Days

It was pouring rain on Saturday! Actually, it was OK in the morning (I even biked earlier), but it started raining the moment Igor and I got off Metra Electric. it was unfortunate because we could not walk around and there was no usual block party atmosphere, but the good part was that there were no lines. We got to see everything we wanted to see, and everything was included in our advanced tickets.

First, we went on a Railcar Tour (we couldn’t get there two years ago). All of the cars on this tour are privately owned and Amtrak-certified. That means that, for example, if you own one of these cars and decide to go to New Orleans, Amtrak will attach your car (your hotel-on-wheels) to the train that goes to New Orleans, and here you go!

Pullman Visitors Center And Musem

Each time Igor and I come to Pullman (and especially since it acquired the status of the National Monument), we see some new improvements. This time, we wanted to check out the new visitor’s center and its exhibits.

Rail Cars Reception

On Thursday, Igor and I attended the Annual Rail Car Reception organized by Historic Pullman Foundation. It was a benefit event, and since neither Igor nor I had time to go to Pullman Days this year, I thought I could support Pullman financially and see cool cars simultaneously. So I got two tickets for both of us.

I thought that there would be some programming, but it was literally a reception held in the old cars. It was nice because you could go through three different cars from the late 40s and 50s, but I hoped for more words :).

Also, for some reason, we were almost constantly passed on food (it was mostly finger food, and waiters were walking back and forth with the trays passing us:).

Igor spent a lot of time taking good pictures, but he still didn’t sort them and didn’t share with me, so I will only post the pictures I took

The coolest part was that we could enter all the cabins, and touch everything, and even touch the silverware and menus!

I am not sure I will do it again next year, but it was a very interesting experience!

Pullman Open House

On Saturday, Igor, mom, and I went to the Pullman Open House to tour the homes. The weather was gorgeous; I do not remember ever being on that tour on such a perfect day. Also, that was the best open house we’ve attended from the organizational point of view; the route was planned perfectly, the sights were clearly marked.

Most of the houses which were this year were the new ones. And this time, no pictures were allowed inside, except for two places that contained exhibits.

Mom got tired of climbing the stairs in most houses, but overall, she liked this whole experience, and I am glad we took her out. Like one of the older volunteers commented: keep her moving!
