Mini-Vacation In Boston Day 2: Art And Coffee

Started the day at the Faro Cafe (the best coffee in Harvard, according to my friend). The coffee was good, and the cafe definitely had a vibe.

Could Van Gogh paint this chair?

We continued our way around Harvard…

… and then came to the Harvard Natural Science Museum, where we went to see the Blaschka’s Glass Flowers collection.

I never heard about this collection, and at first, the whole idea of making glass flowers for scientific purposes sounded ridiculous, but it you think about it, what other materials they had? The was no plastic yet, and dried plants bare only a faint resemblance for the real plants.

This was an amazing, unthinkable project: father and son, fifty years of making. Modeling from real live plants and from microscopic images. They made over three thousand pieces, and about a half of them are on display at the museum.

After the glass flowers, we took a look at the mineral collection:

… and I bought vintage flower pins at the museum store:

… and then we kept walking.

To be continued!
