Glenwood Art Fest

More pictures from the Glenwood Art Fest, shared by my friends.

And the very last pictures: saying good-bye to our Great Sea:

One More Chicago Weekend

On Saturday, my houseguests went to Milwaukee to visit Anna and the girls. I thought I would work on my tutorial, but I ended up catching up on life: cooking and baking, talking with Boris for over an hour, home accounting, and Prairie Postgres business.

And then all of a sudden, it was their last full day in Chicago! It turned out that I didn’t have a chance to feed them an American breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon, so I had to cover that, and then we went to the Loop to check out old skyscrapers, which we also somehow neglected to include in our prior excursions.

Then we headed North, stopping at the Bridgehouse Museum:

Then we went to the Starbucks Reserve, because I ike to change people’s opinion about the Starbucks. The only problem was that it was a weekend tourist crowd, so it took a long time to get everything we wanted to eat in separate lines, but we go everything, including the expresso martinies:

Finally, we went to the Glenwood Art Fest. I made a mistake taking a bus from the Starbucks Reserve. It was the Chicago Air and Water Show, and the traffic in the direction of Lake Shore Drive simply didn’t move! After an hour of staying on a barely moving bus, we got off and walked to the Fullerton station, and finally arrived at the Art Fare.

I know that my friends took more pictures, so I will post more when they share!

Grant Park Music Festival

That was the last week of GPMF, and it was one of my favorite pieces (and to be honest, who doesn’t like Carmina Burana?!). I had two subscription tickets and an extra one, so my guests and I went. It was absolutely perfect, not to mention that I had a chance to showcase Chicago night lights! The photos are partially mine, partially my guests.

Photos With Friends

A couple of photos taken during my friends’ visit – there should be more~

It’s Not Only NASCAR…

The plan for Sunday that my guests and I had was to go to the market in the morning, and then straight to the Field Museum. We planned to be there by 11 and probably stick around until 3 or 4 PM.

We left the house a little bit later than we planned, and waited for the next L-train a little bit more than we planned, but it was still fine; we didn’t need to rush. We had two options: either to take the Red Line to Lake, and take bus 146 from there, or take the Red Line all the way to Roosevelt, and then walk. I decided on the first option, because it was a hot day, and the walk might not be so enjoyable, and also, it’s more fun to see something through the windows rather than being underground.

When we got out of the Red Line at Lake, we saw that State Street was closed for a small/medium size rally. It looked like it was about to pass to the North, so we waited, and about 15 minutes later, we finally saw our bus. It was packed, and when we entered, we realized that there was a Bears game at Soldier Field. That meant not only that the bus was packed, but also that it was barely moving, and all the traffic was stalled. People started to get off the bus and walk. I felt like an idiot for choosing the bus in the first place, and we still had to walk! We finally arrived at the Field Museum at 12:30, and we had to start with lunch.

Fortunately, everything was great after that: we stayed in the museum until it was closed. We saw the Evolving Planet exhibit, the T-Rex 3-D movie, and the new exhibit Reptiles Alive!

As usual, there were more things we didn’t see than the ones we saw :).

Friends Visiting

My friends from France are staying with me for twelve days. We planned this visit for over two years, and I can’t believe it finally happened!

We had talked so much about the lake, and the first thing they wanted to do when they arrived at my house from the airport was go to the beach. I was happy to do this because I believe that the lake is the best thing in Rogers Park, and I completely approve of the idea of the beach being more important than dinner.

I was even happier to see their faces when they got into the water and declared that it was exactly what they needed.

I took a day and a half off, so today we went to the Aquarium, and it was an absolutely perfect visit!

…and went to the beach again!

Tomorrow, they will have a whole day on the beach while I will be at work, but I think it still won’t be enough!

It’s The End Of The Weekend…

… and if you ask me right now about my weekend, I would say that I was working! This would be at least partially true, but I do not feel miserable about it. This impression comes mostly because I was working for the past nine hours, more or less nonstop. There are two reasons why this does not make me miserable: first, I had many meaningful activities before these nine hours, and second, I had been extremely nervous for the past two weeks about not finding time to do all this work. So now that a big chunk of it is done, I feel much better :), and feel like this weekend was well spent.

One of my old friends from Palatine visited me for the first time since I moved to Rogers Park, and we had an amazing time together! She liked my house, the neighborhood, and the beach. The weather was not especially beach-friendly, so most likely, if I were by myself, I wouldn’t even go, but since she already went that long way, we went, and the rain retreated :). While we were sitting chatting at the beach, a lady approached us and said that she was advertising a chess tournament, and how there were not enough women in chess, and maybe we could give it a try. I had no time and no desire, but I loved her enthusiasm, so I took the information from her. It was so “Rogers Park-like” that I could not explain better what I love here!

We visited my mom, then went to Charmers, got some coffee, and ate the buns that my friend had brought from a Polish bakery.

She loved our courtyard and wanted to take a picture of it, and then she said she wanted me in the middle because my clothes matched our beautification color scheme.

After she left, I changed from the beach outfit to the nice one and went to a coworker’s 50th birthday party. I really admire and respect this person, and he might be the only person for whom I would go all the way to Berwyn! An over-an-hour one-way Uber trip, plus staying there for an hour and a half, and a trip back, and 50+ people in the bar from whom I knew maybe five or seven… I am telling you, I would not do it for anyone else!

Montreal

When I started planning my trip to Montreal, I notified my old friend from Ottawa that I would be in Canada, and she graciously suggested that she come to Montreal to see me. We used to visit each other often, but later things changed, and the last time I saw her in person was in 2016. I planned on coming a day before the start of the conference so that we could have the whole day for ourselves, but later I learned about the Postgres Extensions Day, a day before the opening, so the organizer convinced me to attend. As I mentioned yesterday, I attended for a half-day, and at about noon, my friend messaged me that she had arrived, so I left the event.

We had an amazing time catching up. Since my friend shares my thrust to culture, we could not just “walk around.” After lunch, we went to see the Notre Dame Basilica, and then Chateau Ramezay – a former governor residence, and currently a history museum.

Showing Chicago To My Guest

One of the conference attendees (and my good friend) stayed at my house for the whole event and the weekend after, which was great for both of us, and we were each other’s moral support :). It was her second visit to Chicago, and this time, not only did I show her places in the city she hadn’t seen before, but also, I walked with her around Rogers Park and showed all the best local spots, because she and her family will stay with me in August.

Post-Christmas Helsinki

The weather was/is really miserable; it’s warm, but no sun, no snow, no nothing. Probably the worst I ever saw at that time of the year. However, still a lot of Christmas decorations up!

I met up with my friend Natasha, and we walked around a bit before sitting and chatting at the Fazer cafe.

The city is still beautiful, even with this miserable weather 🙂
