Eating Habits And Health

I had this WBEZ piece in my list of opened tabs for a very long time. As much as it sounded reasonable, I internally disagreed with its message. When Lena visited last weekend, we ended up talking a lot about changing eating habits, and I decided to go back to that piece and the research it referred to.

To be precise, I agree with the opening statement that there is no “one best diet.” Also, I understand that the new immigrants might feel lonely in many ways, including missing familiar foods. However, many traditional foods of most cultures, including American traditional food, are objectively not the healthiest.

There are many historical and economic reasons for eating habits to be formed a certain way, but it does not mean we should keep following them out of the force of habit. The conditions of life have changed; most of our lives have changed compared to how people lived a hundred years ago, not even talking about the earlier times. Maybe something is wrong with me, but I don’t understand the “food nostalgia” many people born in Russia mention, like missing the condensed sweetened milk or some types of ice cream or sodas. I am not saying I am rejecting my heritage food entirely. There are tons of great foods that I not only use but also frequently advertise, such as multiple vegetable soups or buckwheat, but definitely not the fried fish or soups for which you would sautee the vegetables before adding them to the broth.

I often hear these ideas about “it’s better to eat what you are used to eat,” and i discgree with it categorically. When I chatted with Lena during the weekend, she told me how difficult it was for her to break the eating habits that were engraved in her brain by her mother and her grandmother and how long it took her to learn to listen to her body and to eat only when she wants and what her body really wants. And now, it makes some sense, I am coming back to the statement that was made on this WBEZ show – there is, indeed, no “one size fits all” in what, when, and how we eat. The same as one shouldn’t blindly follow “what everybody says is healthy” patterns, they probably should not follow “traditional” means “better pattern.

All of this was to say that I am really happy and proud of Lena for breaking her old habits and making positive changes in her lifestyle. Now, she does not say that “she does not like strength training,” and I am sure that very soon, she will be faster than me on her bike!

What Are Saturdays For?

Yesterday was very hot, but today’s weather was going to be wild, so I tried to squeeze in as many out-of-the-house activities as possible. Some of my house guests objected, saying that they wouldn’t survive and that it would be even worse, so whatever I wanted to do with my guests this weekend had to be done on Saturday. It was great to spend Saturday doing fun stuff in the city instead of catching up with life as I do too often these days.

Here is how it went. As always, I started the day with a bike ride (a relatively short one, just an hour). Then I made breakfast: a baked apple pancake, scrambled eggs, and breakfast patties.
Then we went on the Architectural cruise. It was already burning hot by 10 AM, and Sonia could not possibly sit on the top deck for the whole duration of the tour, so I spent most of it sitting with her downstairs:). The rest of the party was entirely exhausted by the heat, but they still loved the views.

After the cruise, we cooled down in the Architectural Center

And then walked to the Art Institute because the Rayan Center was closed last week, and Sonia didn’t get a chance to do art.

As it often happens, parents do not mind doing the art either 🙂
Sonia drew Rogest Park Beach
Adults took turn to see the actual art exhibits.
Taking the bridge to Maggie Daley Park

And after that came Maggie Daley Park, and no matter how hot it was, those who wanted to do the climbing wall climbed, and those who wanted to explore Ship did so, and those who wanted to splash in the fountain, did so as well.

We finished the day at Acanto, and my highlight was a new dessert called lemoni. From the first glance, it looked like a lemon:

But then you crack it open, and…

In the end, everyone agreed it was a great day!

Mini-Vacation In Boston. Day 2: The Ocean And The Food

My friend told me that in addition to taking tons of pictures, I also absolutely have to try some of the local food, and I can’t leave Boston without trying it.

With that in mind, we headed in the direction of the Boston Harbor.

We didn’t visit this museum – next time!
The harbor is absolutely amazing!

Rose Luxury Dinner

That was the place we had the only dinner on this trip (Friday at Silver Lyan felt very much like dinner for me, but apparently not for Vlad :), and on Sunday, Boris and I had dinner at the American Airlines lounge). Vlad was going to keep our dinner destination a secret, but accidentally sent me an email which was meant to be for Dylon :).

The full pdf of the menu is here, and here is a picture I took in the restaurant:

As you can see, that’s another level of culinary art (I can assure you that everything tasted most unusual, like you never could imagine!). Since there were four of us, Vlad ordered the whole menu, and each dish was delivered with a story that was, unfortunately, not on the menu! Vlad also ordered a wine pairing for him and me to share. Not all pictures turned out well, but most of these dishes are below:

Only a spoon of ice cream with caviar in the middle is edible, the rest is decoration:)
Surprisingly, I didn’t like desserts that much, this one it the only one I liked

The ethical question I have is whether it is acceptable to have a dinner for four for the price, which is equivalent to some people’s monthly income. Yes, that’s because Vlad gives more than 30% tips, and yes, that’s in DC where people’s income is higher than in Chicago, and yes, this was more of an art than food, but still…

CSO and Forte

The only outing Boris and I had in Chicago this week was going to the CSO on Thursday (and going to dinner in Forte before that). It was really-really great (I mean the concert, but the dinner was also good :))

Jakub Hrusa really impressed me, and Gil Shaham was great as usual!

With a different conductor, but the same piece, the same orchestra, and the same Gil Shaham 🙂

When he was called for an anchor, he shared a story from the beginning of the pandemic, when composer Scott Wheeler wrote a piece about isolation, and sent it to him. Gil Shaham performed this piece for his anchor; it is called Isolation Rag :))

I captured this moment of Mr. Chen chatting with the youth during the intermission. He always gets engaged with the audience, and this time, I saw him signing the program for one of the teens, and later, I saw them passing us on the way to their seats showing the happiest smiles!

Pret A Manger Reopened!

It’s finally back to Chicago! I complained on Instagram about them not coming back after the pandemic, and two years later, they tagged me back:). I was so excited that I ie-installed the app and re-joined the club two days in advance – I removed both when Pret left Chicago.

That’s one of the oldest initial locations. Yesterday, they had a pre-launch and gave away 200 breakfasts and 200 lunches, but I didn’t need either, and also, I didn’t have time to stay in line. Still, I made sure to come and see! The only thing which I wish would be different – they are only open until 5-30PM, and they are closed on weekends, and that’s when I need them most.

Helsinki Day 2 – Dinner

Harald restaurant is an awesome place. I discovered it last year when we had two conference events with my previous company, and this time, I didn’t have any doubts about where we should have a family dinner (what was supposed to be the June birthdays dinner, but whatever :)).

Everybody loved it, both the food and the ambiance. And it turned out that there was a playroom for the kids 🙂

Friday Night

On Friday, I had a night out with my friend who is moving from Chicago to Boston. By the time I return from my trip, she will be already in the process; that’s why we had our little farewell on Friday.

We had dinner at Forte and then watched 1776 in the CIBC Theater, and it was a perfect Friday night!
I have not been to Forte since it reopened after remodeling and was renamed Forte from Tesori. They went to a smaller selection than the previous menu, but everything was of excellent quality. Also, they serve Vanille desserts, and I forgot about it until I saw it!

The show was great! I love this musical, and this production has an additional twist – all male parts are sung by women, and this is done in such a compelling way that ten minutes into the show, you forget about it and focus on what’s going on on stage.

It was a wonderful night indeed!

I wanted to say that it was the first good night of the week, but I immediately corrected myself because I had other good things this week, like dinner in the youth shelter and Chicago PUG. And a very fun recording of my talk. I don’t know what to make out of this week. I am sitting in the Field Lounge of American Arilines (yes, after an hour wasted last night, I checked-in at the airport with no problem, checked-in my luggage, and had some time to sit in the lounge). The food here is really awesome, so I decided, I will skip dinner on the plane and eat here. So yet another time – something stressful and then something good.

Vilnius: Lithuanian Comfort Food and Coffee

On this trip, I rediscovered Lithuanian food. I recalled everything I liked many years ago, and we made sure never to eat at the same place twice, and try different foods each time.

On the first day, there were zeppelins and Lithuanian kvass, and this kvass was so incredibly good, that we never skipped it:). The one which we tried in the first place was the best though.

Zemaiciu was another thing I had very fond memories of, as well as other kinds of potatoe-based foods.

I even tried potatoes pancakes with pig ears!
And Boris tried potatoes and pork sausage
Forgot this dessert name

Vilnius

I am in Vilnius first time after 33 years. I visited it several times before when I was still in school (the Baltic countries were “affordable West”), and 33 years ago, it was our first romantic getaway with Boris. After that, he visited Vilnius several times for many conferences, but not me.

I was looking forward to DevDays Europe in Vilnius, but then as I mentioned, they moved online.
I could cancel the hotel, but as for the plane tickets, I could only move them to a different date. I thought: we talked about going to Vilnius before, so why not now?

I moved a hotel reservation to the end of the week, cut one day off our stay, and moved the plane tickets, so here we are now! The hotel location is perfect; the room is super cozy, the weather is sunny, and the food is great and half-price of what you have in Finland.

The Lithuanian cuisine highlight – the zeppelin
Fied (“second-day”) zeppelin
Lithuanian kvass – to die for!!!
