Making Christmas Happen

The two “major distractions” of this holiday season (Anna’s surgery and my conference) forced me to do even more planning than usual. I honestly hope that’s the first and the last Chrismas season of that sort in my life.

Here is how I am dealing with this challenge so far.

  1. I had three kids from the Secret Santa for Chicago Public Schools. That’s the project I was involved with since almost since it’s very beginning. I went through multiple organizational changes with it, but by now, I learned to watch for the letters early and not to struggle with the choice of presents; I learned to read between the lines of the letters :). The only challenge this year was that the presents drop-off period was the after-Thanksgiving week, when I had no time in my schedule for that. I am happy that I figured out a time interval on Monday when I could take Uber both ways, with all the roads being empty and the ride prices low. And I am happy with my choice of presents
  2. Since I moved to Rogers Park, I lost the “Adopt a Family” program which was run by the Palatine Township, and I could not find anything similar around me. This year, I found out that the Night Ministry is doing a similar project for families and single individuals in the transition living program, and I even managed to find people who are running this project. The rules (and the amount of information I receive about the family) are very different from what I used to have, but I was able to pick up something for everyone, so I hope it will all work well. My next challenge is to find the time to drop off the presents because I will have just a few days between my return to Chicago and my departure to Prague, and after I come back there are again just a few days left before the presents are due. I am sure I will be able to find the time for a drop off, and I feel very good about this program – it’s like the missing piece is finally found.
  3. I also have very little time for Christmas cards, and for the past three days, I used all the time I was not “on duty” to draft Christmas messages to my friends. That is the process you can’t speed up because each season greeting is special and meant to be for that one person you are sending it, especially for people who live far away. I am done with all but two drafts of the cards that I need to send before leaving for Prague.
  4. Cookies are scheduled with military precision, and the new tins are ordered – not in the cheapest possible way, but just to be sure we have them on time! (I might run out later to get more if I find a non-existing time).
  5. I do not usually decorate the house right after Thanksgiving, but this season, I had no other options, so I compromised :). By the time I left for Milwaukee, everything except for the tree was up.
  6. My Christmas tree delivery is also scheduled, and I will have to be very efficient in order to decorate it before I leave, but it should also work out.

And why I am doing all this decorating right before I leave for a week? That’s because I want to return to the beautifully decorated Christmas house. I am always decoration for myself, not for the visitors, and that’s one of the things about Christmas I like the most:)

The Best Advent Calendar

The girls opened the first windows of their Advent calendars. As for me, I opened mine last week, when Boris was still here, because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to open it half of the time, and also, I wanted to share at least some of it with him.

My Advent calendar this year was a gift from my friend in Sweden. the one I already showed, and now I can tell that everything tastes even better than in looks!

Other Christmas Things

Everything opened as it should, on the schedule, and I decided that if I wanted to do at least some of the Christmas things, the only time I could do them was last Saturday. I am still not sure whether it was a good idea because I also decided to take Mom with me (and we met with Igor in the Loop), and the crowds were ginormous! Also, the Magnificient Mile Light Festival was happening at the same time. I wisely decided not to go there, but even without it, there were lines everywhere, crowds so massive that it was difficult to walk, and we ended up spending more time in the lines than otherwise.

Cards And Cookies

It’s that time of the year again!

Do you want a Christmas card from me? Please let me know!

Do you want a box of my cookies? – Let me know!

Do you live in Chicagoland and want to bake and decorate with me? I will have an Open Cookie House On December 9 and 17 – please come!

You do not have to send me a card or cookies as a reciprocation unless you want!

I am ready to share the joy of the season:)

Not Over Yet!

The Christmas Tree is already gone, and all Christmas decorations are in storage, but still, I got more cards and presents in the mail!

Still, Cards And Cookies

My tree will come down on the upcoming weekend but I still receive Christmas mail! Looks like the flight cancellations and the rest of the mess right before Christmas also affected mail delivery, and my parcel from Germany sat in ORD for at least a week!

I finally received it yesterday!

There is such a variety of cookies, and the ones I tasted are awesome, and out of twenty, only one broke!

Here is a Christmas card from Japan, which also made it this week:

Also, a card from one of my few still-sane Russian friends made it to that side of the pond! It looked like it crossed the Atlantic swimming on its own, so the card itself was almost destroyed, but the ornament inside survived, and I hung it on my Christmas tree:

I am going to take the last picture of my cards display on Saturday, before removing them and storing them.

A Second Christmas

As we had December 26 as the “Christmas day observance,” I declare it to be two Christmas Days this year:). And on December 26, I went o Milwaukee to spend a day with Anna’s family. I brought all my presents, the presents from Igor, the bracelets my mom gave to the girls, and two giant chocolate Santas from Boris. And also, I had my skates with me, because we planned to skate together, so although it was a day trip, I took a bigger suitcase than I usually take to Helsinki.

The girls decorated this snowflake for me
And Anna supplied me with enough flavored coffee to last until the next season.

And we went skating together, although it took four attempts to find the right size for Kira, and she refused to skate at the end 🙂

And today was the final day of my Christmas marathon: I had mom and Igor over for tea, and we exchanged presents.

Two of my cookie parcels are “almost” delivered, but at least in the destination country, and the Ukrainian parcels are still god-knows-where, but all of the remaining parcels are delivered. Unfortunately, there are three unclaimed boxes that were intended for local people who ended up not coming to pick them up. I know that some people didn’t come due to the weather, but you know what -we will eat them for a change 🙂

Also, I received a parcel from Ireland today, and more postcards, and I hope that some might come before the end of the year!

Our First Christmas – Reblogging

For some reason, WP didn’t let me reblog the same post for the second time, and I am sure I could do it before. But since I was unable to figure out what exactly went wrong, just putting a link here – Every Christmas, I remember how did we spend our first one…

Cards And Cookies Are Coming My Way

I waited until 9 PM, but nothing came with today’s mail. Most likely, our house was skipped again, and all the mail I’ve seen for the past three days in the “Informed Delivery” will arrive on Tuesday. I know that at least three more Christmas cards are there. But many arrived in time, and my fireplace looks very festive –

And I received a parcel form New Zealand, with cookies, and the best woolen socks ever, and a summery Santa!

The Joffrey’s Nutcracker

I made an almost last-minute decision to go see the Nutcracker at Joffrey Ballet this morning (and to take mom with me). That’s because it was still so cold that you could barely walk outside, and I knew mom would have to be Ubered whenever we decided to go.

Most museums closed on Thursday afternoon and didn’t reopen yet, but Joffrey ballet sent an email saying that they keep all performances and that the 25% discount still works. Also, I found incredibly cheap seat very close to the stage, and that was perfect for mom (she can’t hear the orchestra from the balcony). So I purchased tickets for the 11 AM (!!!) performance and pre-ordered Uber both ways.

It was so good, I can’t even describe it! I love this Chicago version much more than the classical version – it is better in al possible ways. Each time I see it, I love it more, and it was something special in today’s performance. I overheard somebody saying that she had tears in her eye throughout the whole first act, and I felt the same. I hope Joffrey will never return to the classical version 🙂

Since if was so cold outside, I expected it to be chilly at the Opera house and was surprised to find it warm enough to check in the coats. A lady at the coat check told me that they started heating at 3 AM to make it comfortable!
